Directed by the wonderful Jessie Lee Mills, the reading stars talented actors James Tang and Bree Wernicke, with Charlotte Gulezian on stage directions. Tickets are available at the door, but you can also snag them in advance on Eventbrite!
]]>And THE SNAKE GOD OF FIJI (A HEDDA GABLER PREQUEL) was a semi-finalist for this year’s Ashland New Plays Festival!
Both plays are stories I originally developed with The Vagrancy‘s Writers’ Group. Thanks to all these organizations for their support of my work!
]]>In Northern Italy there is a small town named Orta. Next to the town is a lake. On the lake is a tiny island. And on this island, there are absolutely no snakes, dragons, or monsters–thanks to St. Julius, who, according to legend, sailed across the lake on his cloak in the 4th century, and banished them.
These days, Orta is known to be a romantic destination for couples in love. No wonder newlyweds Kasper and Tajana decide to honeymoon there! But when some of the banished serpents decide it’s the perfect time to return home, Kasper and Tajana are forced to face their pasts–and the secrets they’d hoped would stay hidden forever.
ORTA is directed by Jessie Lee Mills (who I collaborated with during the development of both WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WYCH ELM? and WINCHESTER/WINCHESTER), and the reading will feature the acting talents of Todd Aaron Brotze, Logan Donovan, Hazel Lozano, Daniel Penilla, Anthony Rutowicz, and Garrett Walters, with stage directions by Kara Contreras. After the reading, there will be a brief audience talkback moderated by June Carryl.
If you’ll be in Los Angeles, reserve your seat to ORTA’s reading on Eventbrite–and don’t forget to check out the other plays that are part of Blossoming, The Vagrancy’s Festival of New Plays!

Sam is going to tell us a story. It’s a story about the complications of friendship. It’s a story about heartbreak, the triumph of love, and the human condition. It’s a relatable and universal story. But also, it’s just a story…
…Or is it?
RELIABLE NARRATORS
by Katherine Vondy
directed by Carly D. Weckstein
featuring Paul Turbiak, Danielle Gonzales, Kari Lee Cartwright, Robert Paterno, Rebecca Aranda, and James Tang
SATURDAY, JUNE 11TH @ 12 PM PST
Lyric Hyperion Theatre
2106 Hyperion Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Talkback @ 1:30PM PST with Moderator: Brittney S. Wheeler
If you can’t make the in-person reading but you’re still interested in the play, you can also sign up to receive an audio recording of the play through the Eventbrite link!
]]>My newest play, WINCHESTER/WINCHESTER, tells the stories of two pairs of teenage sisters living in sister cities a thousand years apart. Juxtaposing the slacker vibe of the 1990s with Old English-inspired speech patterns, the play explores the ways in which young women attempt to find their places in the world–and the ways in which the world does not make space for young women.
Directed by Jessie Lee Mills. Featuring Amanda MacDonald, Kara MacDonald, Cassidy Davis, Schuyler Girion, and Maggie Dorfman, with dialect coaching by Meagan Prahl.
Tickets are available on Eventbrite. The reading will be released at 5 PM Pacific on Tuesday, June 1st, and will be followed by a live-streamed Q&A on The Vagrancy’s YouTube channel at 7:30 PM Pacific. However, if you happen to be busy on the night of June 1st, there’s no need to worry–the reading will be available to view for a week!
]]>Directed by Desiree York, the reading features actors Luke Rampersad, Jully Lee, Samantha Rund, Anisha Adusumilli, and Peter Pasco. Lauren Campedelli serves as Creative Producer, and Chris Raymond and Bree Pavey from The Blank are making it all happen virtually.
Register for a passcode and you’ll receive a link to view the play anytime between 8 PM Pacific on October 19th and 10 PM Pacific on October 22nd. I began writing this play in 2017 with The Vagrancy, and it’s been great to be able to continue its development while I’ve been stuck at home this summer. Turns out a mental jaunt to 19th-century Norway is a great break from smoke-filled Los Angeles of 2020!
]]>You can find more info about all the plays and reserve your virtual ticket here. I’m also very happy to share that The Vagrancy will be donating 10% of ticket sales to Peoples City Council Freedom Fund in support of Black Lives Matter protestors and organizers.
]]>Directed by the fabulous Jessie Lee Mills, WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WYCH ELM? uses a historical mystery to explore the ways in which society imposes identities on women, and ultimately ask how much it’s possible to truly know another person. The reading stars Amelia Phillips, Adelaide Lummis, Brad Griffith, Cassidy Davis, Natalie Reiko, Kristin Renee Mothersbaugh, Paul David Story, AJ Clark, Ron Morehouse, and Nicky Romaniello. Tickets are pay-what-you-can.
And if one reading isn’t enough for you, you can read more about all the terrific plays that will be part of Blossoming 2019 here!
I’ve been re-writing the play through the last few weeks of the Playdate workshop process, and this presentation of the new version is directed by Miranda Stewart and features Nicolette Acosta, Allison Andreas, Betsy Currie, Danielle Gonzales, Irene Park, Cameran Surles, and Cathy D. Tomlin.
Here’s what the play’s about:
After the devastating failure of her latest research project, marine biologist Doris is struggling to get her career back on track–until her best friend Marie shows up for an unexpected visit. To the surprise of all the sea creatures in the lab, Marie inspires Doris to embark upon a study of the lab’s newest addition, a rare dragonfish. But with her attention focused on uncovering the secrets of her unusual specimen, Doris fails to realize that Marie has a number of dark secrets of her own. And as these secrets float to the surface, the boundaries between who is doing the studying and who is being studied start to disappear.
And check out this delightful video montage of one of our rehearsals!
