The Athena Project will be discussing my historical (but modern) play about an unsolved WWII mystery at 5:30 PM Pacific on July 18th, 2022 as part of their Read and Rant series. Since it takes place on Zoom, anyone can join from anywhere in the world! All you have to do is register here; you’ll receive a digital copy of the play to read beforehand and a Zoom link to the online event.
A little about the play:
While wandering Worcester, England in 1943 in search of bird eggs, a teenage boy happened upon the skeleton of an unidentified woman inside the trunk of a large tree. An investigation commenced to determine who the woman was and how she died, but it raised more questions than it answered. Was she a spy? Was she a prostitute? Had she been part of an occult ritual? Theories abounded, but no definitive answers emerged. Then graffiti began to appear around town, asking a question that remains unanswered to this day…
WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WYCH ELM? uses the historical mystery to explore the ways in which society imposes identities on women, and ultimately ask how much it’s possible to truly know another person. It was developed with The Vagrancy‘s 2018-2019 playwrights’ group, through which it had a public their 2019 new play festival, Blossoming, in Los Angeles. It was a Semi-Finalist for Scranton Shakespeare Festival’s 2020 Scratchfest and the Athena Project’s 2022 Plays In Progress Series.
Hope to see you there!
]]>Thanks to the Athena Project for continuing to support women in the arts, and congrats to all the other PIP Semi-Finalists!
]]>First, in anticipation of the Athena Project’s Plays in Progress Series, on March 9, the new Read & Rant Book Club in Denver, CO, will be reading and discussing my play THE SNAKE GOD OF FIJI (A HEDDA GABLER PREQUEL) along with Henrik Ibsen’s classic play.
Then, THE OCEAN DEEP will be workshopped through METLab with the Maryland Ensemble Theatre in Frederick, MD. Tickets to the public readings on March 14 and March 21 are available here.
Finally, the Campfire Theatre Festival is bringing THE FERMI PARADOX back to Boise, ID to be a part of the Treefort Music Festival. If you have a festival pass, check out the staged reading on March 29.
THE SNAKE GOD OF FIJI (A HEDDA GABLER PREQUEL) and THE OCEAN DEEP are both plays I developed through The Vagrancy‘s new play development program, and I started working on THE FERMI PARADOX through the Theatricum Botanicum Seedlings, both in Los Angeles. I’m so excited to see all of these plays continuing to have lives in other parts of the country!
]]>First, I recently took a short trip to London, which was fantastic! I got to see so many fascinating historical sites that I’d previously only read about, like the Tower of London:
In addition to all the sightseeing, I also got to have a reading of my play THE FERMI PARADOX with The Script Readers, a cohort of professional actors that does developmental readings of new plays and screenplays. It was a delightful night and I was impressed by the talent and thoughtfulness of the whole team! Thank you to Shenagh Govan, Nora Connolly, and all the other Script Readers who helped make this reading happen!
Secondly, I’m excited to share that THE SNAKE GOD OF FIJI (A HEDDA GABLER PREQUEL) was selected to be a part of this year’s Plays In Progress Series with The Athena Project! I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to get back to work on this play, and already looking forward to the reading in Denver next June. Stay tuned for further updates!
